Entry for July 21, 2007 ![]() Hello,
This blog will cover classic RPG gaming. I will be talking about both video game RPGs and classic pen and paper games. The first games I will be covering are Dragon Quest 1 (known as Dragon Warrior in America) and the Dungeons and Dragons Basic Set. Why did I choose these two games to start? Dragon Warrior was the first video RPG I played. My cousin Peter brought Dragon Warrior to my house and lent it to me. I was hooked immediatly. The Dungeons and Dragons Basic Set was the first pen and paper RPG I played. I started playing in 5th grade when my friend Paul got the box set. My friend Corey and I had experimented with RPGs a bit using the rules we found in adventure game books. Game books were like solo adventures and we would make up continuing adventures for the characters in them. One of us would play the part of the book (we did not know the term Dungeon Master yet) and the other the character. Some of the ones I can remember playing were: Lone Wolf The Fighting Fantasy books like Sword of the Samuri The Car Wars game book Duel Track The Middle-Earth gamebooks like The Legend of Weathertop You can learn more about these game books at www.gamebooks.org. I can remember one gamebook that involved having a sword named Excalibur Jr. and adventuring in the time of King Arthur but I cannot remember the name. These books were a great way to get started on the path to RPGs. They were like Choose Your Own Adventure but without all the random death. That is about it for this post. Next time I will do my classic review of Dragon Warrior and talk about classic D+D gaming. 2007-07-21 18:51:43 GMT
