Classic Play
This blog will focus on classic RPG gaming. I will be covering both pen and paper and computer/console RPGs.
Entry for August 13, 2007

Hello again,

I managed to run the first part of King's Feast, which is module B11 for Classic D+D. This is, finally, the kick off for my D+D campaign. For the most part King's Feast is a dungeon crawl in two parts. The original module has the players arriving in town to find out that the town cleric has been kidnapped by orcs. They raid the nearby orc dungeon and set him free while realising that there is more going on in another level of the dungeon. They return the cleric to town and then go back.

Since I am stringing a bunch of B level modules together I am making adjustments to the plot. First I had the characters actually be present for the attack on the town, also I lay hints about bugbears trying to give orders to the orcs from some unknown "queen".

All in all the adventure went well and I should be running the next section the week after next. There was a small hiccup when the two of the players decided to slaughter a room full of orc women and children that cost them some XP and an alignment change.

As far as my GURPS Traveller campaign goes I ran another session of that and we are almost to the end of the Martian Revolution section of the arc.

The overall idea for the GURPS campaign is to hit major historical times during the OTU timeline. I added a revolution by the world's space, moon, and Mars colonies in the next century. The players are Space Marine officers tasked with brining the rebel areas back under control. For the most part this game features strategic combat where the players make a plan and then can only affect it over the radio.

The next phase of the campaign will center on a generation ship sent to establish Earth's first extra solar colonie. The players will play the part of the crew of the ship. The idea is that the voyage will take 180 years. While most of the colonists will be awake, living, dying and having children. The crew will rotate between being on duty for a few years and decades of suspended animation. This will allow the players to have one set of characters for the whole trip. Gameplay will center around organizing the small society, troubles on the ship, setting up on the planet, and a murder mystery that spans almost 2 centuries.

The 3rd phase of the campaign will take place during Earth's experimenting with faster than light travel. The players will play test pilots of the the first FTL craft. I hope to create a fairly detailed fictional ship and model this after the U.S. Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. I want to have them on missions with ever increasing difficulty, political intrigue, and jockeying to be the ones who are actually on the first FTL flight.

Other chapters of the GURPS campaign will cover the Interstellar Wars, the rise of the Third Imperium era, the classic play era, the civil wars following the assassination, and even into the New Era.
